Billiards chalk is primarily made of silica — a fine abrasive compound — bound together with aluminum oxide and a coloring pigment, most commonly blue or green. Despite the name, billiards chalk contains no actual chalk (calcium carbonate).

The silica base is what does the real work: its slightly abrasive texture grips the leather tip and creates friction against the cue ball on contact, reducing miscues when English or off-center hits are applied. Higher-end billiards chalk formulations, such as Taom or Kamui, use refined grain sizes and different binding agents to improve tip adhesion and reduce chalk spray — the same goal as standard chalk, achieved with tighter manufacturing tolerances. CUEELF chalk uses a finer-grain silica blend compared to common chalk brands like Master, which reduces flaking on contact and improves how long the application stays on the tip between shots.
